Frequently asked questions

How do byes work in a bracket?

A knockout bracket needs 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 places. With a number in between, the missing places are byes: the top seeds skip the first round and go straight through.

How many matches are there in a knockout tournament?

One fewer than the number of players, because every match knocks out exactly one player. 16 players need 15 matches.

What is round robin?

Every player or team plays every other one once. With 8 teams that is 7 rounds and 28 games. It is fairer than a knockout but takes longer.

How is the round robin table sorted?

By points (3 for a win, 1 for a draw), then goal difference, then goals scored.

How do I seed a tournament?

List the strongest player first and the weakest last, and keep Seeded as listed. Pairings then put 1 against the lowest seed, 2 against the second lowest and so on, like professional tournaments.
