Press Test my camera and allow access when your browser asks.
Check the live picture. The box at the top says whether the camera is working, or what is wrong with the picture.
Read the resolution, measured frame rate, brightness and focus on the right.
Press Check resolutions to see which sizes your camera really supports, or Snapshot to save a full-size photo.
Why use this tool
Tells you what is wrong: Beyond a preview, the test checks for a frozen feed, a picture that is too dark or blown out, soft focus, a choppy frame rate and a low resolution, and says how to fix each.
The real frame rate: Frames are counted as they arrive, so you see what the camera actually delivers rather than the number it advertises.
Supported resolutions, verified: The camera is asked for 4K, 1440p, 1080p, 720p, 480p and 240p in turn, and a size only counts if it really arrives.
Every camera on your device: Switch between built-in, USB and phone cameras, mirror the view, and show a thirds grid to frame yourself.
Private by design: The picture is analysed inside your browser and never uploaded. Stop test turns the camera off immediately.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my webcam is working?
Start the test. If you see yourself and the message says your camera is working, it is. If the picture stays black, check the camera privacy settings, a physical shutter or switch, and that no other app is using the camera.
Why does my webcam look blurry?
Most often the lens is smudged, you are too close for the autofocus, or the room is dim, which makes cameras use slower, softer exposures. Wipe the lens, sit a little further back and add light facing you.
What frame rate should a webcam have?
30 frames per second looks smooth on calls. Below about 20 it looks choppy. Many webcams drop their frame rate in low light, so more light often fixes it.
Why is my camera only 720p when the box says 1080p?
The camera may only reach 1080p on a fast USB port, with enough light, or in specific apps. Use Check resolutions to see what it really sends here, and try another USB port if a size you expect is missing.
Is the picture recorded or uploaded?
No. The preview and all measurements happen inside your browser. A snapshot is only made when you press the button, and it downloads straight to your device.
Why does my picture look mirrored?
Front cameras are shown mirrored by default because that feels natural, like a mirror. Other people on a call see the unmirrored picture. Use the Mirror button to switch, and snapshots are always saved unmirrored.
